What is it
Self-Serve Pricing is a sales motion where customers can sign up, pay, and use the product without ever speaking to a human at the vendor.
It is the default entry motion in AI, and by a wide margin the most common one in this corpus. 265 companies carry a documented self-serve sales_motion, and they span every category: developer APIs where you read the rate card and start calling (Anthropic, Groq, Together AI, Fireworks AI, Voyage AI, Mistral AI), prosumer apps where you pick a tier and pay by card (Perplexity AI, Midjourney, ElevenLabs, Character.ai), and coding, automation, and cloud tools (Cursor, Linear, Vercel, Zapier).
Self-serve has one hard requirement — a public price and a self-checkout flow — which is why it is inseparable from price transparency. The buyer has to be able to price themselves, buy without a purchase order, and get to first value before any human is involved. If understanding the price means emailing the vendor, the motion isn’t really self-serve.
The pricing implication runs deep: everything has to be on the public page, the upgrade path has to sit in-product, and the credit-card (or prepaid-credit) flow has to work first time. That is the cheapest customer-acquisition motion at the bottom of the market, which is why nearly every AI company in the corpus opens with it and reserves human selling for the enterprise top. For the fuller definitions of adjacent motions, see PLG pricing and sales-led pricing.
How it works
Self-serve pricing has to do the selling that a human otherwise would, so it leans on a small set of mechanics that let the buyer price, buy, and adopt unaided:
| Mechanic | Why it matters | Example on this page |
|---|---|---|
| Public rate card / tier grid | The buyer must be able to price themselves | Midjourney publishes Basic $10, Standard $30, Pro $60, Mega $120/mo |
| Self-checkout (card or prepaid credits) | No invoice, no procurement, no waiting | Tavily bills pay-as-you-go at $0.008/credit after 1,000 free |
| Free or low-friction entry | Lets the buyer try before paying | Cursor Hobby is $0 with no credit card required |
| Transparent, modelable units | Tokens, seats, or credits the buyer can forecast | Groq lists Llama 3.1 8B at $0.05/$0.08 per 1M tokens |
| Per-seat upgrade path | Team growth expands the account without a call | Linear Basic $10 and Business $16 per user/mo |
The two shapes of self-serve checkout map cleanly onto the buyer. Consumer and prosumer apps take a card-on-file subscription: Perplexity AI sells Pro at $20/mo and Max at $200/mo; ElevenLabs sells Starter at $6, Creator at $22, and Pro at $99/mo; Character.ai sells c.ai+ at $9.99/mo on top of a free tier. Developer APIs instead take a prepaid-credit wallet that performs the same job a card does for consumers: Voyage AI hands every account 200M free tokens then meters per-1M-token usage (voyage-3.5 embeddings at $0.06, voyage-3.5-large at $0.12 per 1M tokens), while Tavily fronts 1,000 free credits and then charges $0.008 per credit. Either way, no human touches the transaction.
Unit math (self-serve subscription): On Cursor, a 10-person team on Teams pays
10 seats × $40/user/mo = $400/mo, entirely self-served up to the Enterprise line — no quote, no PO.
Unit math (self-serve API wallet): On Vercel, a Pro account is
$20/mo base + overage; the first 1 TB of bandwidth is included, then$0.15/GB— the buyer models the whole bill from the public page.
Most corpus vendors run a two-motion structure: self-serve for individuals and teams, then a hand-off to a sales-led motion for enterprise. Self-serve sets the public anchor price; sales-led negotiates up from it once SSO, security review, or committed-use discounts enter the conversation.
Companies using this
265 companies in the current corpus carry a self-serve sales_motion — from developer APIs like Anthropic, Cohere, and Fireworks AI to prosumer apps like Midjourney and coding tools like Cursor. It is the single largest sales-motion group in the corpus. The table below lists each, with its pricing model, billing units, and whether it offers a free tier.
Patterns observed
-
Self-serve forces a public number. Across the 265 self-serve companies, the overwhelming majority publish a transparent price — Cursor ($20 Pro), Linear ($10/$16 per user), Perplexity AI ($20/$200), Midjourney ($10–$120). The motion and the transparency are the same decision: if the buyer can’t see the price, they can’t buy unaided. Where a self-serve vendor still gates a number, it is almost always the API or enterprise tier that is gated while the low end stays self-serve.
-
Almost everyone pairs it with a sales-led top. Self-serve handles individuals and teams; enterprise gets a human. Cursor self-serves Hobby through $40/user Teams then quotes Enterprise; Perplexity AI self-serves Pro and Max then sells Enterprise Pro at $40/seat; Vercel self-serves Hobby and Pro then quotes Enterprise. Pure self-serve-only, with no enterprise motion at all, is the minority even among these 265 — Character.ai, a rare pure-B2C case whose entire revenue is a single $9.99/mo consumer subscription, is the exception that proves the rule.
-
Prepaid credits are the API self-checkout. Where consumer apps take a card for a subscription, developer APIs take prepaid credits — the same zero-touch principle, a different instrument. Tavily ($0.008/credit after 1,000 free), Voyage AI (200M free tokens, then per-1M metering), Groq (published per-token rates, pay-as-you-go), and Fireworks AI all let a developer start the same day they discover the product, with no invoice or PO. The wallet is the API-world analogue of the card-on-file.
-
Free entry usually rides alongside. Self-serve and PLG reinforce each other: a free tier removes the last reason to talk to a human. Cursor Hobby ($0, no card), Vercel Hobby (free), Voyage AI (200M free tokens), and Character.ai (free tier + c.ai+) all land the user before charging. In this group the free-tier default is so strong that a paid-only entry — like Midjourney, which has had no permanent free tier since April 2023 — is the notable exception rather than the norm.
-
The upgrade path lives in-product. Because there’s no seller to expand the account, growth has to be a button. Linear’s per-seat model expands with headcount; ElevenLabs tiers step up on credit ceilings (10k on Free → 121k on Creator → 1.8M on Scale); API wallets simply refill. The account grows without a renewal call.
Counterexamples & variants
The cleanest counterexamples are the partially gated vendors that still qualify as self-serve at the bottom. A vendor can run a self-serve freemium subscription for its app while keeping its API or enterprise tier contact-gated — you can self-serve the app and not the programmatic product. In this corpus that split is common: individuals and small teams self-serve per-seat plans, yet price transparency for the enterprise motion (and some usage terms) sits behind a conversation. These are the boundary cases: self-serve at the bottom, a wall in the middle.
The fully gated motion — where there is no self-serve anything and you contact sales to learn the price — is what self-serve is not, and it lives on the sales-led pricing page rather than here. That is the honest test: a company with no public number and no self-checkout has made a deliberate, segment-specific decision to sell exclusively top-down, usually into regulated, seat-heavy enterprise buying where the deal genuinely needs a human.
The most common variant among the 265 is self-serve with a sales-assist nudge: a published self-serve grid plus a “talk to sales” button that appears at the team or enterprise tier. Cursor’s Enterprise sits one row below its self-serve Teams plan; Perplexity AI’s Enterprise Pro ($40/seat) sits above self-serve Max ($200/mo); Vercel’s Enterprise sits above self-serve Pro ($20/seat + usage). Self-serve is rarely all-or-nothing — it is the motion for the lower tiers, with a sales-led escape hatch at the top. The other recurring variant is the pure-API wallet with no seats at all: Voyage AI and Tavily never ask you to pick a plan — you fund a balance and meter down.
What this means for buyers vs vendors
For buyers
Self-serve is the fastest path to value and the easiest to compare — the price is public, so you can benchmark Groq against Together AI, or Cursor against Vercel, directly and without a call. Model your bill from the published units before you commit: token rates for APIs, seat counts for tools, credit ceilings for creative apps. Watch the hand-off point — the moment you need SSO, a security review, invoice/PO billing, or volume discounts, you’ll cross from self-serve into a sales-led conversation where the public price is just the starting anchor and the real deal is in the redline. To learn how these plans are structured underneath, start with our introduction to usage-based pricing and understanding usage-based pricing models; to size a specific vendor, use the Cursor pricing calculator or the Vercel pricing calculator.
For vendors
Self-serve only works if your pricing page does the selling — a clear public number, a unit the buyer can model unaided, and a checkout with no friction. If a buyer has to email you to understand the price, you don’t have a self-serve motion; you have a lead form. Decide your instrument by buyer type: a card-on-file subscription for prosumers (the ElevenLabs $6/$22/$99 ladder), a prepaid-credit wallet for developers (the Tavily and Voyage AI pattern), and a free tier to remove the last reason to talk to a human. Keep self-serve for the lower tiers and add a sales-led path where deals genuinely require security review or custom terms. If your checkout runs on prepaid credits, our prepaid credits guide covers the grant, burn, and expiry mechanics that make the wallet feel effortless.

FAQ
What is self-serve pricing?
Self-serve pricing is a sales motion where customers can sign up, pay, and use the product without ever speaking to a human at the vendor. It requires a public price, a self-checkout flow (card or prepaid credits), and a product simple enough to adopt unaided — the norm for developer APIs and prosumer AI apps.
How common is self-serve among AI companies?
It is nearly universal at the entry level. In the corpus, 265 companies carry a documented self-serve motion, spanning developer APIs (Anthropic, Groq, Voyage AI), prosumer apps (Perplexity, Midjourney, ElevenLabs), and tools like Cursor, Linear, and Vercel. Most pair a self-serve bottom with a sales-led enterprise top.
Does self-serve require public pricing?
Yes — structurally. If a buyer can't see the price and check out alone, it isn't self-serve. That is why self-serve and public price transparency travel together, and why some vendors keep their enterprise or API tier behind a contact form even when their lower tiers are self-serve.
Where does self-serve stop?
At the point where the deal needs security review, custom terms, SSO, or committed-use discounts — i.e. enterprise. Cursor runs self-serve from its free Hobby tier through $40/user Teams, then switches to a sales-led Enterprise motion; Perplexity self-serves Pro at $20/mo and Max at $200/mo but quotes Enterprise Pro at $40/seat.
How do developer APIs do self-serve checkout without a subscription?
They take prepaid credits instead of a card-on-file subscription. Tavily gives 1,000 free credits then bills pay-as-you-go at $0.008/credit; Voyage AI grants 200M free tokens then meters per-1M tokens. The instrument differs from a consumer card, but the zero-touch principle is identical.
Related sales motions
- PLG PricingA sales motion where the product itself drives acquisition, expansion, and retention — typically anchored in a free or low-friction tier.
- Sales-Led PricingA sales motion where a human at the vendor must engage to close the deal — typically tied to custom quotes and committed contracts.
- Partner-Led PricingA sales motion where the vendor's primary go-to-market route runs through resellers, system integrators, or strategic partners rather than direct sales.
