Perplexity sets a Sonar API sunset date: September 27, 2026
Perplexity's developer docs added an explicit end-of-support date to the existing Sonar-to-Agent-API migration banner, giving developers a firm deadline to move off the original Sonar Chat Completions API.
The Sonar API pricing page carried a migration banner ('Sonar Chat Completions is now Agent API. Migration guide here.') with no stated end-of-support date.
The same banner now reads: 'Sonar Chat Completions is now Agent API. Sonar will be supported until September 27, 2026. Migration guide here.' No Sonar token, request-fee, Search API, or Embeddings rate changed.
Perplexity has been steering developers from its original Sonar Chat Completions API toward the newer Agent API for some time, but the docs previously gave no deadline. As of 2026-08-14, the Sonar API pricing page states Sonar “will be supported until September 27, 2026” — roughly six weeks out from this check.
This is a packaging/lifecycle change, not a repricing: every Sonar token rate, the per-1,000-request search fee by context size, the $5.00-per-1,000 Search API, and Embeddings rates are all unchanged. Developers still building on Sonar now have a concrete migration window to move to the Agent API, which bills third-party model tokens at direct provider rates with no markup and meters tool calls (web_search, fetch_url, sandbox, etc.) separately.
Perplexity's Agent API `fetch_url` tool price doubled back to $0.0005 per invocation, undoing the halving to $0.00025 that took effect on 2026-07-29. Confirmed by two independent worked cost examples on the docs page: the "Agent API Research Preset" total is $0.007 on 2026-08-14 versus $0.00675 on 2026-08-11 — a difference that only reconciles if fetch_url returned to $0.0005. `web_search` ($0.0025), `people_search`/`finance_search` ($0.005), and the $0.03 `sandbox` per-session fee are all unchanged, as are Sonar, Search API, Gateway, and Embeddings rates.
