Anthropic cancels Sonnet 5's scheduled price hike, locks in $2/$10 as standard
Anthropic made Claude Sonnet 5's introductory $2/$10 per-MTok API price permanent, canceling the previously scheduled Sept 1, 2026 increase to $3/$15.
Claude Sonnet 5 launched July 23, 2026 at an introductory $2/MTok input, $10/MTok output rate, explicitly scheduled to revert to the standard $3/MTok input, $15/MTok output rate on September 1, 2026.
Anthropic's API pricing docs now state the $2/$10 per-MTok rate for Claude Sonnet 5 is the standard price; the scheduled September 1, 2026 increase to $3/$15 will not occur.
Anthropic’s API pricing reference (platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/pricing) added a standalone note to the Sonnet 5 rate card: “The $2/$10 per million input/output token pricing for Claude Sonnet 5, announced at launch as introductory pricing through August 31, 2026, is now the standard price. The previously scheduled increase to $3/$15 per million input/output tokens on September 1, 2026 will not occur.” The note was not present on the equivalent page as of an August 4, 2026 capture, placing the change sometime in the intervening weeks.
Every other line item on the rate card — Opus 5 ($5/$25), Fable 5 ($10/$50), Haiku 4.5 ($1/$5), and all subscription pricing (Pro $20/mo, Max $100/$200, Team $20-$100/seat, Enterprise $20/seat + usage) — is unchanged. The practical effect is that Sonnet 5, the default model across Pro/Max/Team, gets meaningfully cheaper on a permanent basis versus what Anthropic had originally announced for its post-introductory-period price.
Anthropic's API pricing docs confirmed Claude Sonnet 5's introductory $2/$10 per-MTok rate — originally set to expire August 31, 2026 — is now the standard, permanent price; the previously scheduled September 1, 2026 increase to $3/$15 will not occur. Every other rate (Opus 5 $5/$25, Fable 5/Mythos 5 $10/$50, Haiku 4.5 $1/$5, and all subscription tiers) is unchanged.
